Aimee Jo Martin said it was the brown, soulful eyes and expressive face that drew her to the newest member of her pack.

“I fell in love with his face, his eyes really,” she said as she petted Nick, a German shepherd that just a few months ago faced a dim future.

At approximately 18 months old, Nick was picked up by Iredell County Animal Control after apparently being abandoned. One of his rear legs was damaged — likely broken when he was still a puppy — and never treated. READ MORE
