Do you deal with aggressive or hard to train breeds?

Yes! We train all breeds. We specialize in working with difficult or hard to train dogs.

My puppy is only 8 weeks old. Is he too young to begin training?

Puppies learn at a very rapid rate, so you want them to learn the correct things at an early age. Training starts as soon as you get your puppy. What you are able to teach them will be limited but they will be able to learn potty training, sit, wait, and the manners they need to know to be able to live with you. Puppies do best with short, easy training sessions, with only a few repetitions. The sessions should be only 5 to 10 minutes each, several times daily.

My dog is 6 years old. Is he too old to start training?

Dogs are learning all the time. They are learning to pull on the leash, learning to chew on the chair leg, learning to chase squirrels, learning to growl to keep you away from food or toys, learning to bark to get attention, etc. It is never too lat to begin teaching your go to do things properly. At Highland Canine Training, LLC we have successfully trained dogs that were ten years or older.

I don't mind if my dog jumps on me, but he also jumps on my children and my friends that come over to my home. How do I get him to understand the difference?

Dogs DO NOT understand sometimes. They only understand always or never!! Your dog is incapable of making human judgments. If there are times that you do not want your dog to jump on people…then your dog can never be allowed to jump on people. This same rule applies for nipping, mouthing or any other behaviors.

I have a puppy or young adult who is mouthing, chewing and jumping on people. Won’t this behavior just go away as he / she gets older?

Probably Not. These behaviors if not dealt with properly can become a part of the dogs adult behaviors and can remain until corrected.

I have a male dog that is showing aggression. Will having him neutered fix this?

No. Altering a dog will not change inappropriate behaviors and can often make them worse.

Are other members of my family able to attend the training?

Yes, we highly recommend and encourage anyone who works or lives with the dog(s) attend training sessions. We will even work with small children to ensure that they are capable of handling the dog(s).

Will my dog remember me after their in-kennel stay?

Yes, your dog will give you an enthusiastic greeting and be very glad to see you! Your dog will learn to listen to the trainers and will consider us his friends, but you will remain the dog's "family".

Will my dog listen to me as well as he listens to you?

You will receive a training video or DVD of your dog's training when you pick them up. It is up to you to practice the training in the same manner that we did the training. It is also up to you to modify the dog's environment to set him up to succeed at home. Your trainer will discuss these things with you on the DVD and in the final drop-off visit. Your dog will come home with good manners as his new "habits". Your dog will be capable of doing everything he did with the trainer as long as you take the recommended steps to make sure these manners remain his default behaviors.

I have three dogs. Do you offer discounts for mulitple dogs?

Yes. We offer discounts for multiple dogs, adopted or rescued dogs and we also offer a law enforcement and military discount.

I want my dog trained. Should I enroll in the Private Lessons or the In-Kennel Training?

We have enormous success with either of our programs. We recommend the Private Lessons for those people who have the time during the week to work with their dog to build a good training foundation. For those clients who have a very busy lifestyle or clients that live outside our service area, we recommend the In-Kennel training to build that training foundation.

Where do the Private Lessons take place?

Private Lessons generally take place in your home (within our service area). This gives us a great opportunity to see your dog first hand in their environment and to assist you in dealing with behavioral issues where they occur. Some clients prefer to conduct their lessons at our facility to help with socialization and environmental issues. Please give us a call and we can discuss which location would be best for your dog.

Do you offer boarding?

Yes. We do offer boarding at a reduced rate, but only for our clients.
